Basel, 27 January 2026 – Change at the top of the Basler Zeitung (BaZ): As of 1 February 2026, Nina Jecker will assume the role of Editor-in-Chief. She succeeds Marcel Rohr, who, after many formative years at the helm of the BaZ, will take on new responsibilities within the newsroom.

Marcel Rohr – a defining figure at the BaZ

Marcel Rohr (59) began his journalistic career at the Basel weekly newspaper «Doppelstab» and then spent more than a decade as Head of Sports at «Blick» and «SonntagsBlick». He joined the Basler Zeitung in 2005, where his career led him from Head of Sports through various editorial roles before being appointed Editor-in-Chief in 2018. Under his leadership, the BaZ further strengthened its journalistic profile, expanded its local and regional coverage, and fostered closer collaboration within the Tamedia network.

In his new role as Senior Editor, Marcel Rohr will contribute his extensive expertise particularly to local reporting, sports journalism with a focus on football, and special projects.

Nina Jecker – experienced journalist with a focus on AI

Nina Jecker (45) brings many years of journalistic experience within the TX Group. She began her career at «20 Minuten» and has worked for Tamedia for many years, including in Bern, Zurich and Basel.

Jecker joined the Basler Zeitung in 2014 as Head of Local News and held various editorial leadership positions. After a brief professional move into communications, she returned to the BaZ in December 2021. Since January 2023, she has led the Society and Culture desk and has already served as Deputy Editor-in-Chief. Through her journalistic versatility, her instinct for relevant topics, her keen eye for digital developments and her expertise in artificial intelligence, she has established herself as an integral pillar of the newsroom. Nina Jecker has also recently been appointed President of the Foundation Board of the renowned Zurich Journalism Prize.

The change in the editor-in-chief position takes place as part of Tamedia’s ongoing digital transformation and underscores the company’s commitment to delivering high-quality, independent and innovative journalism in the age of AI.

Simon Bärtschi, Head of Publishing at Tamedia, said: “We would like to sincerely thank Marcel Rohr for his many years of dedicated and impactful work as Editor-in-Chief of the Basler Zeitung. Under his leadership, the BaZ has further strengthened its journalistic quality and regional relevance. At the same time, I am very pleased that Marcel will remain with the newsroom in his new role. With Nina Jecker, a distinguished, experienced and visionary journalist is taking over as Editor-in-Chief. She brings deep journalistic expertise, a strong understanding of digital transformation and an excellent connection to the region – qualities that will lead the BaZ successfully into the future.”
